MU Postdoctoral Fellow Rachel Ruhlen Elected to National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) Board of Directors

Rachel Ruhlen, who earned her PhD in Biological Sciences at MU, was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the National Postdoctoral Association. Rachel founded the Postdoctoral Assocation (PDA) at MU, and has been active with the NPA for the past 3 years. She will begin her term on January 1, 2010. Full announcement.

Associate Dean Tucker Honored with
Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer Invitation

Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, recently annouced that Graduate School Associate Dean Sheryl A. Tucker has been invited to become a Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer beginning in 2010. According to their Web site, lecturers are "outstanding individuals who are at the leading edge of science....[and] can thereby communicate their insights and excitement to a broad range of scholars and to the community at large." Sigma Xi was founded in 1886 and has 60,000 members around the world. The Society publishes American Scientist magazine.

2009-2010 Fellowship Recipients

Vice Provost for Advanced Studies and Graduate School Dean Pamela Benoit recently announced the recipients of the 2009-2010 University of Missouri Graduate School Fellowships. List of Graduate School 2009-2010 Fellows.

Chancellor's Award for Public Outreach

First Lady of Mizzou, Dr. Anne Deaton, presented three awards to graduate students during the 2009 Adventures in Graduate Education event held April 25 in Jesse Hall. Full story.

Never Too Late To Learn

Memory loss. Climate change. Genetically modified food. All these topics and more are covered in the Science and Me community education program, set up by Drs. Hannah Alexander and Sandra Abell. In this program, MU graduate students learn how to connect with the public by conducting educational seminars in the community. See full story

Graduate Students Travel to Taiwan

Over the 2009 new year, fifteen MU graduate students in counseling psychology, school counseling and mental health traveled to Taiwan to hone their professional knowledge and skills. Collaboratively they documented their experiences and "lessons learned" with photos and a daily blog. See full story

Third Graduate School Employee Nets
MU Service Champion Award

The MU Staff Advisory Council (SAC) recognized Norma Jackson as the December 2008 recipient of the MU Service Champion Award. Jackson is the coordinator of student recruitment and activities with the Graduate School. Earlier in 2008, the SAC honored Sue Allmart, an admissions adviser and Gretchen LaButti, office support staff, with the Service Champion award.

According to the SAC Web site, the award recognizes employees who "go above and beyond what is expected to see a special project succeed."

Graduate School Featured in the Missourian “Pride Edition”

The MU Graduate School was one of several featured sections in a special edition of the Columbia Missourian, released November 8, 2008.

Entitled the “Pride Edition,”  the purpose of the tabloid was to generate public enthusiasm about Mizzou. Copies were distributed to approximately 40,000 households in mid-Missouri, state legislators, Extension offices and Missouri media outlets.

The collaborative project was the vision of Jim Sterling, Journalism Professor and Missouri Chair in Community Newspaper Management. MU Chancellor Brady Deaton sponsored the publication. MU’s PR Council, and professionals from communications, University Affairs, and the Missourian contributed to the project.
