The GRE, MAT, GMAT and Your Graduate Admission Application

Official Graduate Catalog Entry: To the Index

Graduate applicants may be required to submit the general test scores of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or an appropriate alternative, nationally normed test such as the Miller’s Analogies Test (MAT) or the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). MU’s individual graduate programs determine whether standardized test scores such as the GRE will be required for admission. Please check with your degree program of interest to determine if scores are required and to find out about their policy for applicants who do not submit required documents.

Making Sure Your Scores Are Sent to the Right Places on Time

When scheduling a date to take the test, allow enough time for test scores to be included in the application materials. Be sure to designate the University of Missouri and your program of interest as locations to receive the scores.

In general, GRE testing locations will not allow you to bring any paper or other notes into the test room but will instead provide you with a list of schools and degree programs to choose from. After sufficient time has passed for the scores to be sent, you might need to contact your program of interest to make sure you correctly chose it to receive your scores.

  • MU’s Institutional Code for the GRE and TOEFL is: 6875.
  • The Institutional Code for the Miller’s Analogy Test is: 2138.

When Older Scores Are Permissible

Students who are applying to a doctoral program that requires the GRE and who have earned a master’s degree may, at the discretion of the admitting academic program, present scores more than five years old. Students who do not have a master’s degree must present scores that do not exceed five years. GRE score reporting policies have been adopted by the GRE Board relative to keeping and reporting GRE scores earned during the five-year period before the beginning of the current testing year. Current GRE Board policy, in effect since October 1985, states that scores are reportable for five years.

Non-Computerized GRE Tests

Pencil-and-paper test dates for the GRE may be available in areas where computer based testing is unavailable. Contact your campus testing center for more information or contact the Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6000, Princeton, N.J. 08541-6000.
