Graduate Award for Achievement in Service

Humanitarian Medal

The Graduate School is pleased to call for nominations for the Graduate Award for Achievement in Service. This award recognizes alumni who have achieved excellence that transcends their professional fields, affecting in a positive way their communities, states, nation and the world. The award honors annually one MU graduate whose highest degree (whether master's or doctoral) was granted by our university. The Chancellor's Office supports this award generously by funding the graduate fellowship awarded in the honoree's name from the Chancellor's Fund for Excellence.

Criteria for Nomination

Nominees should have an established record of service to society over a period of time. They should have demonstrated a positive social impact in the public or private sector. Although nominees should have an exemplary record in their professions, their service should involve activity beyond their professional responsibilities, resulting in improvements to their community, state, nation and/or the world. A nomination must demonstrate how the nominee's graduate education contributed to his or her efforts.

Eligibility

Nominees must be living alumni of current or previous graduate degree programs at the University of Missouri. Nominees must have earned their highest graduate degrees from MU. Current employees of the University of Missouri are not eligible to receive this award.

Nomination and Selection Procedures

Each graduate program may make up to two nominations. Submit the following materials in electronic form (on disk or by e-mail attachment):

  1. Completed nomination form. (PDF)
  2. Letter of nomination from the dean or department chair.
  3. Nominee's vita or resume documenting the nominee's achievements.
  4. A maximum of 3 letters of support may be included (including the letter of nomination).

The criteria for selection will be:

  • The nominee's level of achievement
  • The quality and extent of the translation of the nominee's graduate education into wider communities.

Award and Recognition

The award winner will be honored at the Graduate School Commencement Ceremony and will be reimbursed for travel expenses (within the continental United States).

A 1-year $15,000 fellowship in the name of the recipient will be given to a student from the graduate program from which the award winner graduated. Funds for this award are provided by the Chancellor's Fund for Excellence. Fellowship recipients should be continuing students at the doctoral or master's level. The fellowship may be combined with other awards. Fellowship recipients shall be selected by the department and should demonstrate promise of an outstanding academic career and exemplary service to their community.
