Eligibility: Medical Insurance for Graduate Students
There are two insurance policies offered on the MU campus.
- One is for U.S. citizens (to be referred to as the "domestic plan").
- The other is for international students (to be referred to as the "international plan").
Domestic Students
Any student can enroll in the insurance, but to receive the subsidy, you must have a qualifying assistantship or fellowship.
International Students
Accident and Sickness Insurance for International Students ("international plan") is mandatory for all international students with an F or J visa status who started at MU for the first time in fall semester 1998 or later, and those students are automatically enrolled. If you are an international student who started at MU before fall semester 1998, you are not automatically enrolled in the international insurance plan, but you can elect to enroll.
Becoming a Permanent Resident
If you become a permanent resident during one of the semesters, you will need to follow the domestic plan instructions for the semester after which you become a permanent resident, as you will no longer be automatically enrolled in the international plan.
