Amount & Coverage: Frequently Asked Questions

Will the subsidy cover spouses and/or children?

No. Although a qualifying student's coverage is subsidized, any coverage of a spouse or children on the policy is subject to the regular, unsubsidized premium. In addition, the policy that is chosen for the student must be the same as the policy chosen for spouse and/or child(ren).

Can the subsidy be used to cover insurance from a company other than the one providing MU student insurance?

No. The subsidy applies only for those students who qualify and enroll in the campus-wide insurance policy that is offered to all students.

Are international students with assistantships able to use the domestic insurance policy instead of the one offered through the International Center?

No. The policy offered through the International Center is mandatory for international students; however, international students who qualify do receive a subsidy on the premiums associated with the International Accident and Sickness Insurance Policy.

If my research assistantship is paid by a grant, either my own or that of a faculty member, will my insurance premium be charged against the grant?
