About the Certificate
The graduate certificate in conservation biology provides students with interdisciplinary training outside the boundaries of current MU graduate degree programs. There is no single graduate program at MU that effectively prepares students for the interdisciplinary nature of a career in conservation biology.
Eligibility
Students must be enrolled in a graduate degree program at MU to participate.
Plan of Study
Students must complete 15 credit hours of course work outside their area of major for a PhD, or 9 credit hours of course work outside their area of major for a MS/MA, and practical internship: 160 total hours of an internship in resource management or public policy or both.
Courses
No specific courses are required. Interdisciplinary course work should include:
- 15 credit hours of course work outside their area of major for a PhD or 9 credit hours of course work outside their area of major for a MS/MA
- Practical Internship: 160 total hours of an internship in resource management or public policy or both
Students will be required to take the needed course work outside their area of major or department. Courses may not count for both degree course credit within their department and conservation biology certificate credit but would be considered “electives.” However, total credit hours needed to complete their degree need not exceed Graduate School requirements (i.e., 30 hours for MS/MA and 72 hours for PhD degrees).
Students will be required to take courses that broaden their knowledge and practical skills. Students will take courses in three major areas:
- Policy
- Science
- Techniques
