Oral-English Courses at Mizzou for International Teaching Assistants/Instructors
If candidates successfully complete any of the following MU courses, they automatically qualify for a language reassessment at the end of the semester in which the course is taken.
Candidates may also qualify for reassessment if they complete an Individual Language Development Plan or other off-campus classes with proper documentation.
- ELSP 004 Oral Communication
- This course is offered by the English Language Support Program. For more information, call 882-7523 or go to 208 McReynolds Hall for information about and consent to take these courses.
- Intensive English Program
- Graduate students also often enroll in the Intensive English Program (IEP) in the summer, when the program emphasizes work on oral skills. A special section is offered in the summer for graduate students and prospective ITAs. - ED LPA 7302: Tools for Teaching American Students
- This class will focus on advanced academic listening, discrete pronunciation skills, techniques for leading lab sections and one on one interactions, as well as give a general overview of American classroom culture. Requires an MU Oral Language Proficiency Assessment score of high 1 to low 2 and course consent. Offered fall and spring semesters.
- ED LPA 7303: Communication and Culture for American College Teaching
- This class will focus primarily on the linguistic aspects of teaching and specific pedagogical and cultural aspects of the American classroom. It will emphasize fluency development at the suprasegmental level and interactive teaching skills, such as organizational, questioning and compensation strategies. Requires an MU Oral Language Proficiency Assessment score of 2 and course consent. Offered in fall, spring and summer semesters.
- ED LPA 9437: Instructional and Communication Strategies for Effective College Teaching
- This class will focus on teaching and presentation strategies such as presenting with technology, using case studies and problem based learning, interactive learning, and classroom and course management. The linguistic emphasis will be on reduction, linking and speech patterns. Requires an MU Oral Language Proficiency Assessment score of 3 and course consent. Offered fall and spring semesters.
