Q. Who is eligible for the program?

A. While the Emerge Graduate Preview Weekend is designed for juniors and seniors who are cultural or ethnic minorities, underrepresented populations in a field of study, and first generation students, the program is open to all prospective graduate students.

Q. How do I apply for the program?

A. You may access the EMERGE application online.

Q. When is the program held?

A. The program is held in the fall semester; typically in October.

Q. What happens if my plans change and I cannot attend the program?

A. We understand that situations happen outside of our control. If you have been accepted and your plans change, please email or call us as soon as possible so that we may give another student the opportunity to attend.

Q. How do I apply to the University of Missouri?

A. Visit https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=umc-grad for admission information.

Q. What if I decide not to go MU?

A. We encourage you to apply and enroll in a graduate school of your choice.

Q. Will there be time for me to meet with individual faculty members?

A. During the program you will meet with representatives from your department of interest. If you would like to meet with other faculty members during your visit please review the Graduate Preview Weekend schedule so that you can make appointments that do not conflict with our schedule.

Q. Should I research information about faculty members prior to arriving at MU?

A. If you are pursuing a doctoral degree, we do encourage you to look up information about faculty members in your prospective department in order to gain information about their research interests, to locate faculty with who you have similar research interests.

Q. Will there be time for me to meet with current graduate students?

A. Yes. There are specific times allotted for interaction with current graduate students.

Q. Will I have any free time for myself?

A. There is very limited free time. This program is designed to give you the information you need concerning, graduate school in a limited amount of time. Therefore, your time at the Preview Weekend is maximized. There will be some free time on Thursday and Friday evening to be used at your discretion.

Room and Board

Q. Am I responsible for making my hotel reservations?

A. No. The Fall Preview Weekend program director will make your reservations.

Q. Do I have to pay for my hotel room?

A. No. The Graduate School pays the room cost for your stay in Columbia, Missouri. Students are responsible for incidental expenses.

Q. How are rooms assigned?

A. Rooms are assigned by the program director. A minimum of two students share a room. Hotel accommodations are for Emerge participants only.

Q. Do I have to pay for my own meals?
A. All cost associated with scheduled meals will be covered by the program.  Dinner will be provided on Wednesday night. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided on Thursday and Friday.  Breakfast will be provided on Saturday. You will be responsible for any snacks.

Travel Related Questions

Q. Who is responsible for making travel arrangements?

A. The program director will make travel arrangements for each student.  We will try to select flight times that coordinate best with each student’s schedule.

Q. How will I get to Columbia from the airport?

A. The program will coordinate shuttle service for each student from the St. Louis Lambert International Airport via Mo-X.  All arrangements will be provided to students in advance.

Q.How will I get from the hotel to campus?
A.  Students will be shuttled to and from the hotel to campus in a University leasing van.

Q. When will I be leaving Columbia, Missouri?

A. The program concludes on Saturday morning.  Shuttle service/ flight times will be arranged immediately thereafter.

Q. If I am driving, will I be reimbursed for my travel?

A. For those students driving to campus, you will be reimbursed the standard mileage rate set forth by the University of Missouri for your travel to and from Columbia.  You should submit your reimbursement request prior to leaving Columbia on Saturday morning.
