What Will the Interns Do?
Below is a general list of activities and responsibilities.

The 2008 Emerge Summer Calendar (PDF) lists all Emerge events (e.g., seminars, oral presenations, GRE preparation) in June and July. Note: The handbook and calendar will be given to interns at orientation and are only on this site for reference. All information is subject to change.
- Orientation and Mentor Luncheon
- These events give interns and mentors a chance to meet and become familiar with their respective responsibilities for the internship.
- Research with a Mentor
- Interns work up to 40 hours per week in their faculty mentors’ research lab or office.
- Lab Safety Training Course
- General training for lab safety
- Human Subjects Training
- Review of the Institutional Review Board policies on working with human subjects
- Presentation and Research Poster Symposium
- Each intern creates a poster, abstract and 7-minute presentation to be shared during a campuswide undergraduate symposium at the end of the internship.
- GRE Preparation
- This is five weeks of intense preparation and study for the GRE graduate school admission exam. Interns typically spend four hours of class time per week in this course.
- Brown Bag Lunches
- Weekly one-hour brown bag lunches will cover topics such as: writing skills/personal statements, the application process and financial aid.
- Group Activities
- The Summer Research Internship staff plans several intern get-togethers and group activities throughout the six weeks.
