Credentialing (Dossier) Service Now Available: Interfolio
Graduate and professional students who are entering the job market now have access to a fee-based credentialing (dossier) service from Interfolio. Interfolio provides subscribers ($19 annual fee) with an account to upload and manage electronic files for job application packets such as:
- Confidential letters of recommendation
- Resumes and Curriculum Vitae
- Philosophy of Teaching Statement
- Writing samples
- Dissertation abstracts
- Teaching documents
- Teaching evaluations
- Photos & art (certain formats)
- Student & peer evaluations
- Unofficial transcripts
How it works: In response to job announcements, the student logs into the account and selects the appropriate documents for each application packet. Interfolio then sends the application packet to the prospective employer. Fees range from $4 for an e-delivery to $40 for rush overnight courier delivery. Confidentiality: Interfolio allows students to request and send out confidential letters of recommendation in a secure and trusted way. Faculty members can upload letters of recommendation securely; the students can manage these documents, and send them out to appropriate job opportunities, without ever seeing the letters.
Information for faculty and departments: With our relationship with Interfolio, departments that “vet” a candidates letters in hard copy can continue to do so electronically. If students sign up for their Interfolio accounts through MU (an option, not a requirement), and the department has made a departmental decision to allow one administrative officer (usually a DGS or Chair) to vet letters of recommendation, we can provide that access. Again, this is voluntary both on the part of the students signing up for the dossier service and for their departments. No one will be required to participate.
Disciplinary norms may dictate students’ use of dossier services, but credentialing services like Interfolio are increasingly popular.
