The Accelerated Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) provides University of Missouri BS in Economics students an opportunity to begin graduate study while completing their undergraduate degree and earn an advanced degree on an accelerated timeline.

Economics students already develop valuable skills in quantitative analysis, statistics, decision-making, policy, and understanding how organizations and markets work. Health informatics builds on those strengths and applies them to one of the largest and most rapidly evolving sectors of the economy: healthcare.

Health informatics brings together data, technology, analytics, healthcare, and organizational decision-making. Students learn how to use health information and technology to improve decisions, evaluate outcomes, support healthcare organizations, and ultimately improve health.

Learn at the Intersection of Economics, Data, and Healthcare:

The MSHI is a CAHIIM-accredited graduate program offered through the University of Missouri School of Medicine. The curriculum combines health informatics with healthcare data science, information technology, research methods, and management-oriented concepts.

Students also complete an independent research project and may pursue a summer internship, providing opportunities to apply classroom learning to real healthcare and research challenges.

This combination can prepare graduates for opportunities across health systems, healthcare consulting, health insurance, pharmaceutical and life-sciences organizations, government and policy organizations, research institutions, and health technology companies.

Accelerate Your Graduate Education:

The accelerated program allows qualified and high-achieving BS in Economics students to begin graduate coursework during their undergraduate studies. Students must have completed at least 90 undergraduate credit hours, including applicable general education and undergraduate program requirements, and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

By combining undergraduate and graduate study, students can build on their Economics degree while gaining specialized expertise in a field where data, AI, technology, evidence, and economic decision-making increasingly intersect.

Admission Criteria

This accelerated master’s program is open to current MU undergraduate students who meet the admissions requirements below.

Applicants must:

• Have completed at least 90 credit hours toward a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics
• Meet the following admissions requirements:
  • Have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Certain exceptions apply of the student has high GPA in relevant classes for data analytics or informatics.
  • Have completed all general education requirements.

Certificate description: The certificate program is ideal for working professionals such as physicians, nurses, healthcare administrators, those serving on hospital ethics committees or considering such health ethics issues in their daily employment, and students in the health professions. The certificate program will help the learner develop an understanding of the ethical issues related to health and healthcare and will foster skill in analyzing and resolving ethical problems and conflicts in the healthcare environment.

The Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Project Management educates healthcare providers and workers in healthcare-specific project management. The certificate provides the cross-professional training needed to enable health and health workers of all levels of medical/health qualification to better manage projects needed to improve care quality and decrease healthcare costs. Beginning with supported Electronic Health Record (EHR) adoption and Meaningful Use and proceeding to value-based reimbursement, the healthcare industry has become increasingly focused on projectized, operational improvements. This focus has exacerbated the need for formally trained project managers, projected to grow as much as 79% over the next eight years. Students in the certificate program will gain a basic knowledge of issues in healthcare project management and competence with skills, techniques, and tools used for effective, safe, complaint, healthcare project management.
