Research Discussion-Dr. Petrone
The Bridge-220 Townsend
What is the role of youth, particularly those from historically marginalized communities, in educational research and practice directed at them? Focusing on an ongoing qualitative study with tribal members on a reservation in Montana to address the overarching question, in this interactive discussion will explore Dr. Robert Petrone’s development of a research agenda focused on understanding how youth who exist on the fringes of school find meaning and success in their lives, particularly as these relate to learning, literacy, and identity – and how these youth’s experience can be integrated in (teacher) education to promote equity and social justice. The discussion will include conceptual and pragmatic research issues, including gaining access to and building rapport with youth, research positionality, maintaining research relationships from a distance, and data sharing.
