A considerable body of work has focused on the educational experiences of Black students who attend Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) of higher education. A prominent theme in this body of research focuses on the role of campus racial climate plays in creating an environment where Black students feel unwelcomed, invalidated, and marginalized. Navigating such an environment can have a detrimental impact on Black students’ mental health and well-being. By placing narratives of Black students at the center of inquiry, I illustrate how their experiences with everyday racism impacts their mental health and directs important attention to the importance of expanding efforts to improve campus climates at PWIs.
