Secondary English teachers in rural areas continue to navigate the 2016 election results in real time, often in school districts where social activism comes with real consequences. This project is centered around one rural Missouri teacher who forwards his position of advocacy through a “novel element.” Using an immediate and accessible visual or auditory text, Neal forces students to consider questions of equity and justice without realizing the political nature of the topic. This subversive pedagogy provides possibilities for teachers committed to social justice education in Missouri and other red states.
