OVERVIEW & GOALS: Building upon prerequisite knowledge from the Fundamentals workshop (latest one presented April 10, 2020) this session on Strategies for Equity-based Holistic Review is a hands-on workshop for graduate admissions committee members and department leaders. Participants will articulate and assess their current admissions and recruitment practices, learn how to develop an evaluation rubric that they can put to use, and engage in discussions that will help them anticipate common challenges that may arise in shifting admissions practices. We will make additional resources and research available.
DETAILS: Workshop is 2.5 hours in length; Mostly discussion-based, with some lecture. This workshop is best suited for graduate programs that have already been engaged in discussions or other efforts to address equity and diversity issues.
Dr. Casey W. Miller
Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Affairs in the College of Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He is an experimental physicist focusing on nanoscale magnetic materials and equity issues in graduate education. He directs the Inclusive Practices Hub of the NSF INCLUDES Alliance: Inclusive Graduate Education Network. He graduated summa cum laude with University and Physics Departmental Honors from Wittenberg University, where he was also elected to phi beta kappa. He earned his PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 2003, did his post-doctoral work at the University of California, San Diego, and is a recipient of the NSF-CAREER and AFOSR-Young Investigator Awards.
Dr. Julie R. Posselt
Associate Professor of Education at the University of Southern California. Her research examines institutionalized inequities in selective sectors of higher education, and organizational efforts toward diversity, equity, and inclusion. Her work has been funded by the US Department of Education, Spencer Foundation, Mellon Foundation, and the National Science Foundation. Today, she directs NSF- funded research-practice partnerships: the California Consortium for Inclusive Doctoral Education as well as the Inclusive Graduate Education Network’s Research Hub. Posselt was honored with a National Academy of Education postdoctoral fellowship to study graduate student mental health, the Association for the Study of Higher Education’s Early Career/ Promising Scholar award, and the American Educational Research Association’s Early Career Award. She is Associate Editor of the Journal of Higher Education, and is the author of Inside Graduate Admissions: Merit, Diversity, and Faculty Gatekeeping (Harvard University Press). In 2020 she will release Equity in Science: Representation, Culture, and the Dynamics of Change in Graduate Education (Stanford University Press).
