John D. Bies International Discovery Fellowship
The purpose of the Bies International Discovery Fellowship is to provide support to a University of Missouri PhD student to spend between 4-12 months outside their country of origin to facilitate a core aspect of their doctoral education.
More InformationDissertation Year Fellowships
The Gamma Alpha Gamma Dissertation Year Fellowship and the Raymond White Dissertation Year Fellowship are intended to help defray dissertation research expenses in the same academic year that a student will defend their dissertation.
This is a supplemental fellowship with an award value equivalent to the minimum stipend for a 0.25 FTE assistantship. MU doctoral students in good standing who will be in the final year of their program in AY 2024-2025, who have demonstrated excellent research and/or teaching skills, are eligible to apply. Applicants must have passed their comprehensive exams by the last day of the 8-week summer session of the Summer 2024 semester. Also, there must be at least 7 months between the successful
completion of the comprehensive exam and dissertation defense. Students must also be committed to completing all requirements for graduation, including the successful defense of a dissertation, in the year of the fellowship.
Eligible students are invited to self-nominate for this program. Each nomination will be considered for both awards, although a student may only receive one award. Please see the call for nominations below (PDF) for full application requirements.

No application is necessary; the recipient is notified by the Office of Financial Aid.
Qualifications:
- Graduated from a high school within the State of Missouri
- Enrolled full-time as a graduate student
- Demonstrates financial need
One or two students are selected for the award each year.
Robert N. Epsten Scholarship in International Studies
The Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award Foundation
The Robert N. Epsten Scholarship in International Studies consists of a $10,000 award from the Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award Foundation and the MU Graduate School. The scholarship is given to one exceptional graduate student on our campus who is majoring in the fields of international relations, public service, political science, diplomacy, history or the humanities, reflecting President Truman’s interest and involvement in those areas.
Student Eligibility:
Eligible applicants are current MU graduate students:
- in good standing and making good progress in their degree program,
- majoring in the fields of international relations, public service, political science, diplomacy, history or the humanities, reflecting President Truman’s interest and involvement in those areas,
- and who will be enrolled as a full-time student in the upcoming Fall semester.
The recipient of the scholarship will attend an awards banquet hosted by the Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award Foundation in Kansas City, Missouri (date TBD).

SEC Emerging Scholars Program
The SEC Emerging Scholars Program is designed to provide professional development and networking opportunities for current and recently graduated doctoral students who are considering careers in higher education. The workshop is meant to encourage top scholars – with attention to contributions from individuals with diverse experiences and perspectives – to seek out employment and mentorship within SEC member universities.
MU doctoral students who will be in the final year of their graduate program in AY 2024-2025 and who have demonstrated excellent research and/or teaching skills are eligible to apply. MU doctoral students with exceptional research and/or teaching skills who will graduate in Spring or Summer 2024 (i.e., have degree conferred before Sept 1, 2024) are eligible to apply. Doctoral students will be awarded a 9-month assistantship. Postdoctoral Scholars will be awarded a 12-month postdoctoral position.

Graduate Commencement Marshal
Graduate Commencement Marshals are selected from nominations made by colleagues, faculty, and staff members at MU. Commencement Marshals are recognized at the May or December Graduate School commencement ceremony. Nominees should be degree candidates who have achieved academically, demonstrated leadership and/or mentorship abilities and exhibited a commitment to service while a graduate student at MU. Nominations open in March and October reach year.
