How to Apply for Graduate Admission

Which type of admission describes what you want?
Degree-Seeking, Graduate (on-campus and online)

Earn a master’s, doctoral or educational specialist degree.

Most applicants will start here, including: new domestic and international applicants, online degree-seeking students through MU Direct, transfer students, and current and former MU undergraduate students.

Currently enrolled MU graduate students wishing to change their degree or academic program, should complete the Change of Program, Degree, Emphasis, or Advisor Form (PDF) and submit the form to the academic program.

Returning graduate students follow different instructions.

Degree-Seeking, Professional

The School of Law, School of Medicine, and College of Veterinary Medicine have their own application processes.

Graduate Certificate Seeking

New graduate applicants wishing to pursue a stand-alone certificate only should complete the Graduate School's online application for admission and meet the Graduate School's minimum admission requirements for all programs.

Graduate applicants applying for a degree program should complete the Graduate School's online application for admission for the degree program. Once enrolled at MU, the Change of Program, Degree, Emphasis, or Advisor Form(PDF) should be completed to add a graduate certificate.

Non-Degree, Post- Baccalaureate (online through MU Direct)

Distance students can apply to become an online post-baccalaureate graduate student through our continuing and distance education program, MU Direct.

Non-Degree, Post-Baccalaureate (on-campus)

Take a few classes without being in a degree program, start classes while awaiting formal admission to a degree program, or pursue a stand-alone graduate certificate that doesn’t require degree-program enrollment.

Non-Degree, UM Traveling Scholar (on-campus)

Take a few courses at Mizzou while pursuing a graduate degree at another University of Missouri campus.

Non-Degree, Missouri Undergraduate Senior (on-campus)

Take some graduate course work while you finish your undergraduate degree.

Eligibility

Below are the minimum admission requirements for all graduate programs at MU. Please note that academic programs may set admission requirements above and beyond the Graduate School's minimum requirements.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree from a college or university recognized by a regional accrediting agency. Colleges and universities from outside the United States must be recognized as degree granting institutions by their country's ministry of education.
  • 3.0 or better grade point average in the last 60 hours of baccalaureate coursework (for applicants with less than a master's degree).

  • Standardized test scores such as the GRE or GMAT (if required by the academic program).
  • Acceptable TOEFL or IELTS test scores (for non-native English speaking applicants only)
    • TOEFL minimums: 500 paper-based, 61 internet-based
    • IELTS minimum: 5.5 Academic score
