Annually, the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) and the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) collaborate to produce the national McNair Scholars Directory. The Directory is a database of Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program scholars projected to graduate this year or next year.
The database serves as a valuable recruitment tool by allowing Graduate School deans and fellowship program directors to directly contact a cohort of highly talented and motivated students.

MU's McNair Program Advantages of Recruiting McNair Scholars

McNair Scholars Directory Access

The Directory includes student names, contact information, undergraduate major, and graduate field of interest identified by the GRE taxonomy codes and undergraduate research presentations.
Sorting the directory by the GRE codes or by state would allow graduate programs to directly recruit students interested in a particular area of study or from a particular region. By sorting on areas of interest or fields of study, the data would narrow the list to a manageable format ideal for department chairs and directors to share with faculty.
COE asks that the Directory be used appropriately and specifically. Please refrain from sending out mass messages to students. The Directory should be used as a targeted recruitment tool for graduate programs that match students’ fields of interest as specified in the database. Reports of abuse will result in future restrictions to the McNair Scholars Directory. In the initial communication with prospective students, your program should let them know where you obtained their information.
NOTE — To ensure the protection of student information captured in the McNair Directory, the Excel file is password protected.

Access to the file and the password is being distributed by requesting access from Dr. Arouca via email. Please email her your name, department/program, role in the department as it pertains to recruitment, and the database you want access to.

The purpose of the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement (McNair) Program is to award grants to institutions of higher education for projects designed to provide disadvantaged college students with effective preparation for doctoral study.

All McNair projects must provide the following activities: opportunities for research or other scholarly activities; summer internships; seminars and other educational activities designed to prepare students for doctoral study; tutoring; academic counseling; and activities designed to assist students participating in the project in securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs.

McNair projects may also provide the following additional activities: education or counseling services designed to improve financial and economic literacy of students; mentoring programs involving faculty members at institutions of higher education or students, or any combination of such persons; and exposure to cultural activities.
